Friedrich II von Brehna liv

Friedrich was the son of Friedrich I von Wettin, Graf von Brehna, and Hedwig of Bohemia. He ruled the county of Brehna with his brother Otto from their father's death in 1182. They jointly donated Brehna to their mother as her widow's seat. Also in 1201 they founded the Augustinian abbey in Brehna; its construction began on 14 August that year.

In 1181 Friedrich married Judith von Ziegenhain, daughter of Friedrich, Graf von Ziegenhain, and Liutgard/Luckard von Ziegenhain. They had four children of whom Dietrich I and Hedwig would have progeny.

In the Hohenstaufen-Welf succession struggles unleashed by the sudden death of Emperor Heinrich VI, Friedrich and Otto backed Heinrich's brother Philipp von Hohenstaufen. In 1201 the conflicts between the contending parties also affected the Brehna area. Przemysl Ottokar I, king of Bohemia, and Hermann I, Landgraf von Thüringen, who had gone over to the Welf side and supported Otto IV von Braunschweig, in 1203 used their troops to besiege the cities of Halle and Magdeburg and devastate Brehna and Wettin. Friedrich's brother Otto I and his cousin Ulrich, Graf von Wettin, were able to defeat their enemies in the battles of Landsberg and Zörbig. Otto and Friedrich were present in Halle when King Philipp on 22 January 1202 issued a letter of protection to the abbey of Petersberg. Otto died on 23 December 1203, and was buried at the abbey of Brehna. Friedrich now ruled the county alone.

Friedrich was often present at the royal court. On 20 May 1204 he was in Eger when King Philipp issued a charter for the Teutonic Knights. He was present in 1212 when Dietrich IV 'der Bedrängte', Markgraf von Meissen, founded the abbey of Eisenberg, and in 1213 when he founded the Thomas Abbey in Leipzig. On 20 July 1216, together with Albrecht I von Käfernburg, archbishop of Magdeburg, and Bishop Eckehard of Merseburg, he settled a dispute between Dietrich IV 'der Bedrängte' and the city of Leipzig.

From 1206 Friedrich was guardian of the underage Heinrich III, Graf von Wettin. Heinrich died aged 12, and with him the line of the counts of Wettin became extinct. The county came to the house of Brehna.

Friedrich's wife Judith died on 6 October 1220, and in 1221 he joined the Fifth Crusade. He sought out Emperor Friedrich II at his court in Taranto, and entered the Holy Land with the Knights Templar. He died of an illness at Acre on 16 October 1221.
